Well, although Cuba has been influenced by the western culture sense of dressing, one main and staple piece of clothing that has identified the Cuban clothing is the Guayabera shirt; also know as the Mexican wedding shirt, cigar shirt or bowling shirt. It's been the traditional garment for men and women alike.
The Guayabera shirt has a style of its own and the Cuban culture is very proud of it, even thought there is a controversy of its origins between Mexico and Cuba. The Guayabera is very stylish, cool and comfortable garment to wear. It can be worn casual, semi casual and semi-formal, like to beach and destination weddings. It is all about style, comfort and lightness of the fabrics. Because Cuba is a tropical island and the weather is mainly hot all year around, cotton and linen are the preferred fabrics.
Cuban clothing is all about wearing garments that are made of light fabrics which maintains their coolness in the summer. Like, the traditional Guayabera, button down the front, designed with two- rows of tiny pin-tuck pleats in each side of the front of the shirt where they run up and down inside the 2 pockets, which are located at the top and bottom of the shirt; making the Guayabera a very stylish, comfortable and unique shirt. Why comfortable? Because is made to be worn in the outside, not to be tucked in at all. Allowing the individual to move around with great ease and freedom and not worry about having to re-tuck the shirt or looking messy.
Because of the different fabrics and styles derived from the Guayabera shirt, Cuban clothing has sore in its popularity with destination and beach weddings. Now, you can select a Guayabera or Mexican wedding shirt without the pleats or even the traditional front 4-pockets. They can be worn with jeans or dressy trousers giving it flexibility in its wear. They have really grown in popularity.
The fabrics that are most often associated with the Cuban clothing Guayaberas is linen, cotton or a cotton blend. These fabrics are ideal for warm and tropical climates, letting the shirt or dress feel cool and airy.
For women Cuban clothing also means a guayabera shirt or guayabera dress. The latter fabrics are also the ones used for these garments. Cuban clothing is all about looking and feeling sharp, stylish and comfortable. Men like to wear the linen guayabera or Cuban shirt with linen trousers and a nice Panama hat.
When you see a man wearing a Linen Guayabera shirt with a pair of linen trousers and Panama hat then you could say that he's dress with Cuban traditional clothing.
Bottom line about Cuban Clothing is wearing garments that are stylish, sharp, and comfortable and that's what the Guayabera, Mexican, Cuban, Cigar or Bowling shirt is all about. So, when ever you hear the term Cuban Clothing, you know what they are referring too, casual elegance at its best.
